Development Of The Zara Phillips Clothing Range

By Marissa Velazquez

Zara Phillips, granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II and daughter of Princess Ann, is a well respected equestrian in Britain. She has had an illustrious riding career to date, reigning as Eventing World Champion from 2006 to 2010. She won a silver medal at the Olympics hosted in London in 2012 which was presented to her by her mother. Her dedication and success in the equestrian field made her a natural fit with the Musto brand and a Zara Phillips clothing range was developed.

The Musto brand has been around since 1965 and was developed by Olympic sailor, Keith Musto. He was also an engineer and his aim was to construct garments that could withstand the elements, keeping sailors warm and dry. The garments were well known to the daughter of Princess Ann. Her mother has always loved sailing and wore this brand of protective clothing.

Who better to collaborate with the development of a range of equestrian products than someone who had made a name for herself in this popular sport? In 2009 an announcement was made that Phillips was to be involved in producing a range of equestrian garments for Musto. These products would carry the logo ZP176, which was the team number she rode under when first representing Britain.

With all her practical experience in the field, she had a great contribution to make at every stage of production. In the design stage, freedom of movement was considered to be vital and innovations were made to ensure this. She tweaked a few things such as putting in a longer cut for the jackets so the back would not be exposed when riding in the elements. She also wanted garments to be as stylish as possible, regarding the cut as important. All items were thoroughly tested to ensure that they functioned flawlessly, despite the circumstances.

The items include various jackets like one which is fleece lined, one that is suitable for training and another hooded one. There is also a gilet and a t-shirt. The range was launched in 2010 and have become so popular that a range for children has also been introduced since then.

The technology used in the fabrics means that they are extremely waterproof and breathable. The moisture is wicked out and the warmth kept in. Rain drops simply slide off the fabrics due to the water repellent finish.

This range is available from a number of suppliers, most of which have online websites where photographs of items can be viewed. One can compare items with regards to design, color, features and prices. The right size must be selected and sizing guides are included to help with this.

These garments have developed over the years and now include many features that add to their performance. They may have well positioned pockets for warming up hands. Vents in the back help with a comfortable fit over the saddle. Studs and adjustable drawstrings can help to ensure a snug fit.

The decision to combining the expertise of the Musto brand with the practical experience of a dedicated equestrian to produce the Zara Phillips clothing range was inspirational. These garments are extremely comfortable, keeping riders dry and warm in any conditions. However, at the same time the distinctive designs allow one to look stylish at the same time.
