Healthy Eating Doesn't Need To Be A Chore

By Carolyn Mills

Healthy eating is today a great deal more popular than before and rightfully so. Poor diet is a leading factor in diseases such as heart disease and hypertension which can place a drain on the economy. While we're always being encouraged to stick with healthy eating habits, it is also easier than ever to depend on fast food and other convenience items that are not beneficial for us. It is likely that lots of people feel it will take great effort to eat a healthy diet or that they have to make a large scale change to the way they live. In reality, though, just making a couple of modest changes can positively impact daily eating habits.

In order to see results, it is definitely not a requirement to drastically modify your eating habits. It's not a bad idea if you desire to make considerable changes, but the most crucial thing is to bit by bit switch to making healthier eating choices. Eventually, you will find that you actually prefer to consume healthy foods after you have eaten that way for some time. Like many other habits, change takes place over a period of time and once a new way of eating becomes part of who you are, you are not going to feel the need to go back to your old diet.

Initially, you will need to be very careful when food shopping that you don't unthinkingly put things in your basket that you no longer wish to eat. For example, most likely you have never checked the box of your favorite cereal to find out how much sugar it contains. A good healthy substitute can be porridge oats which have been proven to be good for your heart and can give you good sustainable energy each day. By adding fresh fruit, you can improve the flavor and, before you know it, you will have made a positive change to your diet.

These sorts of changes can be done with all types of foods and can apply to the oils you cook in and the spread you use on bread. Olive oil has monounsaturated fat which can help to reduce bad cholesterol. It is also a rich source of Vitamin E which has many benefits and is also great for your skin. While you may already consume a great deal of fruits and leafy greens, you may want to consider how fresh they are. If you choose organic foods, you can avoid the problem of ingesting crops that may have been sprayed with toxic pesticides. If you can locate a good local supplier of fresh fruit and veggies, you can also consume foods that have not lost their nutrients as a result of storage or not being picked at the right time.

Obviously, it's not hard to begin incorporating healthy eating into your life.
