Botox Trends

By Ariel Mernal

The public is well aware that having botox treatments is a simple and easy solution to make the skin appear younger. Its cosmetic applications have advanced significantly over the last few years, with more and more people now looking to undergo botox injections with the hope of getting rid of fine lines and wrinkles. What was once probably thought to be a procedure whose novelty might wear off one day is nowadays considered to be one that is here to stay.

Celebrity gossip programs on TV talk about botox injections every day, speculating on which celebrities have had the procedure. But the question on many people's mind is 'why is it so popular?' or 'what makes it such a sought after procedure?'

Well, the answer is simple really. Ageing skin is a big problem, and people know that botox is inexpensive and effective. It's a fast treatment, there are no scars which can happen from plastic surgery, and it is pretty easy on the bank account. More and more people have realized this now, thanks to all the publicity botox treatments receive through celebrity use.

Botox for men?

It's a mistake for people to think that the only people out there getting botox treatments are women. This is far from the truth. Granted that majority of the people who undergo botox injections are women, these days' even men are undergoing these procedures. Media outlets have come up with a term for this, and 'bro-tox' seems to fit the bill. It's even about 50/50 men and women in certain clinics that administer botox treatments.

Changing trends

The use of botox is rising. It is estimated that the number of men and women who underwent botox injection rose from 2010 to 2011 by around 5% - that's a rise from 5.4 million to 5.7 million people. Other statistics say that it's 10% that it has been going up, year by year. This is not a shock to anyone. The previously attached 'stigma' and social attitude to botox injections being the treatment reserved for the wealthy no longer exists, and neither does any sense of any shame of undergoing the procedure. This procedure has become quite mainstream and popular.

But that's not all. Many other non-cosmetic disorders can be treated by botox injections, including muscle spasticity disorders and other chronic conditions. Children and adults who suffer from cerebral palsy have had botox help them, as well as those who have blepharospasm and also conditions such as spastic paraparesis. There have been multiple reports of these treatments showing significant benefits for patients. Botox injections can be used to treat excessive sweating, and some have found success in using scalp injections to help to treat migraine headaches.

There is no doubt that the future is bright for botox. Research is ongoing into looking at newer applications, and the results so far are promising.
